Finding YOUR dentist

January 18, 2009 Area of Interest: Cosmetic Dentistry, Dentistry, Life & Lifestyles

“How do you go about finding a really good cosmetic dentist…or even a good dentist period” I was asked that question at a function the other day and it is one of the most common questions I get asked.  My answer, look no further you’ve hit gold and found me :-) Once the laughter dies down we then get down to the nitty gritty.

Below are my top tips to picking the dentist that’s right for you :

  1. Ask family and friends, a personal recommendation is always best (this is usually challenging with cosmetic work as many times no one wants to let on they have had any work done!)
  2. Go in and get a feel of the place.  How does it look, smell?
  3. Chat to the team, are they friendly, smiley, do they take an interest in you?
  4. Ask about the courses the dentist has been on. For cosmetic dentistry they need to be attending regular courses to learn about the latest techniques.
  5. What organisations are they members of .  They should belong to major associations such as the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry or the American Academy of cosmetic dentistry.
  6. Is there a photo album with before and after pictures of their personal work?
  7. Are you able to see testimonials or talk to other patients that have had similar work done?

It would be good if I could find a great dentist like Uchenna here in Sydney

Although you see tooth whitening everywhere, I still feel I wouldn’t have a clue where to start, so it would be good to hear about the different options available. I’d want to know which are the best and worst options where safety, success and price are concerned.

There’s an article in the Daily Mail today about millions of people resorting to pulling out their own teeth because they can’t get NHS appointments. Ouch!

Thanks for the feedback Alicia. Hang in there I will be posting soon about teeth whitening. In the interim I can tell you it is a great treatment to have..as long as it is carried out by an expert. This is definately a case of dentists only don’t be tempted to go have anyone else carry out the treatment. It is actually illegal for anyone other than a dentist to carry out this treatment…and that includes beauty salons!
